The Wailoa Center, in partnership with the PA‘I Foundation, will showcase the work of Native Hawaiian artists April 2-26 as part of “‘Ewalu,” the eighth annual MAMo gallery exhibit.
For the past eight years, MAMo (Maoli Arts Month) has sponsored a gallery show in Hilo. “‘Ewalu,” or “Eight,” will feature 16 Native Hawaiian artists and cover many different genres and media. There will be artwork of traditional woodcarving, contemporary pieces such as digital photography, and everything in between.
The opening reception is from 5-7 p.m. Monday at the center, 200 Piopio St. There will be light refreshments, Hawaiian music and a lauhala weaving demonstration by Lina Abe, who also will demonstrate her work from 1-4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday during Merrie Monarch week.
In conjunction with “‘Ewalu,” a student art show will be located in the downstairs Fountain Gallery, featuring visual artists from Kamehameha Schools Hawaii.
